Why Algerian extremists 'rebranded' as al-Qaeda

Former Algerian Islamist militant leaders have rushed to condemn al-Qaeda in the Maghreb, the group that claimed responsibility for last week's bombings in Algiers which killed 33 people.

Even Hassan Hattab, one of the organisation's former chiefs, was quoted in an Algerian newspaper as warning followers against turning the country into another Iraq and returning Algeria to the dark days of the 1990s civil war.
