Fuel costs hit Delta and American

American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, two of the top three US carriers, on Wednesday both reported losses in the third quarter under pressure from the surge in fuel costs.

Gerard Arpey, chairman and chief executive of American, said while fuel prices had fallen from record levels a few months ago “the economic uncertainty, and what that might mean for travel demand, is a serious concern”.
