Madagascar’s new leader stays defiant

Madagascar’s new leader on Sunday stood defiant in the face of a barrage of international condemnation over the military-backed uprising that swept him to power last week.

Andry Rajoelina, the 34-year-old former disc jockey who became Africa’s youngest president at Saturday’s hastily arranged investiture, refused to bow to demands for swift elections from the donors who fund more than two thirds of the Indian Ocean island’s budget.
