Political polls leave investors uncertain

Until recently, UK investors were reasonably sanguine about next year’s general election. They assumed the Conservative party would win comfortably, introduce an emergency budget and take the necessary measures to tackle the dangerously high levels of public debt.

This past week this expectation was challenged. For the first time this year, an opinion poll suggested an outcome altogether less reassuring for markets. This can be summed up in two words – hung parliament.
