The regulation of hedge funds and private equity is to be debated in the European parliament next month, after a report to the economic and monetary committee stressed a need to improve the existing framework.

The report by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Danish MEP, called for new "capital requirements" - like those that apply to mutual funds, banks and insurers - and a public register for structured products in the region.
