Long-haul fight

Let battle commence. The UK government’s decision to give the go-ahead to plans for a third runway and sixth terminal at Heathrow marks a new stage in the closely fought campaign to stop the project. Expansion should win the day.

The world’s busiest international airport is not the national disgrace that it was 18 months ago. After a disastrous start, Terminal 5 is now working and has eased strains elsewhere in the airport. But even with lower demand because of the financial crisis, Heathrow is still operating at nearly full capacity.
