Tories in shock at Davis’s ‘mad’ gift to Brown

David Cameron’s Conservatives were in a state of shock on Thursday night after David Davis, the former shadow home secretary, resigned to fight a “civil liberties” by-election, a move seen by many Tory MPs as a political gift to Gordon Brown.

Mr Davis’s resignation strips Mr Cameron of one of his most effective front-bench operators and leaves the Tory leader facing an unwanted and potentially embarrassing by-election.
