Pakistan military ruler General Pervez Musharraf swore in a caretaker government on Friday to set the stage for parliamentary elections by the first week of January.

Mohammad Mian Soomro, the Senate chairman and a former international banker, was named prime minister, heading a 25-member cabinet.
