United affair exposes computers’ shortcomings

One mouse click nearly grounded the world’s second-largest airline.

On Sunday morning a reader arrived at a Florida newspaper’s website and viewed a 2002 article on United Airlines’ bankruptcy. The lone page visit triggered a bizarre chain of events that culminated, a mere 34 hours later, in the crash of United’s shares and a scramble by those whose electronic fingerprints were found on the story to assign blame for what went wrong.
