Malta faces asylum seekers crisis

A sharp rise in the number of asylum seekers reaching Malta this summer from north Africa is creating an unprecedented crisis for the government of Lawrence Gonzi, prime minister.

Although Malta hosts about 1.2m holidaymakers each year, it is unable to cope with the arrival of thousands of illegal immigrants, via rickety boats from Libya, because of a lack of resources and help from the European Union.
