Technology risks giving Pandora's box to India's poor

The lightning-paced growth of India's mobile telephony market will unleash socio-economic forces that threaten to overwhelm the country's institutions, one of the world's main telecommunications companies has warned.

Ben Verwaayen, chief executive of Alcatel-Lucent, the Franco-US telecoms company, said yesterday the extension of mobile internet services among the second most populous nation was a "journey into the unknown".
