Romanian polls leave impoverished villagers cold

In the muddy village of Traian - 120km east of the Romanian capital Bucharest - where horse-drawn carts easily outnumber motor cars, no one seems excited about the options this Sunday, when Romanians go to the polls to select a new president and parliament.

At stake is who will guide the country through the crucial period leading to 2007, when Romania, along with Bulgaria, is expected to join the European Union.
