US presidential rivals unite over cutting F-22s

Barack Obama, the US president, and John McCain, his old adversary, scored a joint victory on Tuesday when the Senate voted to stop production of a showpiece aircraft.

The 58 to 40 vote removing $1.75bn (€1.2bn, £1.1bn) for the purchase of an extra seven F-22 fighters from a $680bn defence spending bill is also a success for Robert Gates, defence secretary.
