Gannett sees some hope in the gloom

Investors greeted a 60 per cent drop in profits at America’s largest newspaper publisher, which owns Britain’s second largest chain of local papers, as good news, underscoring the beaten-down expectations for US and UK newspapers.

Comments from Craig Dubow, Gannett chief executive, that the free fall in advertising revenue may be “levelling” also eased investor sentiment.
