Gloom and pride in home nation

Germans on Tuesday expressed pride at the election of a compatriot as Pope but many voiced concerns over Jospeh Ratzinger's conservative views and his opposition to greater decentralisation of power within the church.

Despite having emerged in recent weeks in Vatican speculation as a strong candidate to succeed the late Pope John Paul II, few people in Germany had expected former Cardinal Ratzinger to emerge as the new head of the Roman Catholic church.
