Car buyers switch to hybrids as fuel costs rise

Celebrities from Cameron Diaz to Prince Charles have tried to boost their green credentials by buying hybrid cars combining petrol with electric engines. Sales of hybrids, diesels and plant-based biofuel-compatible cars are at record levels. And in the US, drivers have shifted away from the biggest, heaviest sport utility vehicles and pick-up trucks towards smaller engines and more fuel-efficient cars.
