Beijing to pave way for land reform

The leadership of China's Communist party will meet today to discuss whether to allow peasant farmers to trade their land titles in what could be one of the most significant reforms since the country left Maoism behind three decades ago.

Over the next four days the plenary session of the Communist party's central committee will meet behind closed doors and is expected to take a step that many analysts and policymakers say will lead to the eventual privatisation of rural land.
