One look at the “success stories” listed on the website of Ontario’s economic development ministry gives a clue to how Canada’s most industrialised province sees its future.

The profiles include a company that has developed a new process for purifying silicon for solar panels, another that converts animal manure into heat and electricity, and a third that has devised low-emission cylinder heads for motor vehicles.
