Taxman closes in on secret savings

The Barclays ruling will increase the powers of Revenue & Customs in tracking down people who have not declared interest on savings held offshore, making it far more difficult for savings to be hidden from the taxman.

The number of secret tax havens has diminished as a result of money laundering regulations, an initiative by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the European Union savings directive, which came into effect in July.
