S&P cuts Portugal's long-term sovereign debt rating

Standard & Poor's, the credit rating agency, yesterday cut Portugal's long-term sovereign debt rating after the government forecast a budget deficit that is more than twice the level permitted under the European Union's growth and stability pact.

Portuguese long-term debt was downgraded one level from AA to AA-.
