Developers feel pinch as spending slows

There is no more depressing a sound for retail property developers than the whirr of air conditioning units when there should be the hubbub of shoppers spending money.

Although a walk around most shopping centres might suggest there is little amiss, the sound of silence is haunting retailers and their landlords alike. They share serious concerns that the era of free-spending consumerism may be nearing an end.
