Arriva’s profits boosted by new rail route

The addition of the Aberdeen to Penzance CrossCountry rail franchise helped Arriva, operator of the UK’s longest train route, report a 30 per cent rise in profits for 2008.

However, David Martin, chief executive, warned that the CrossCountry route needed a 10 per cent rise in passenger numbers to maintain profitability in 2009 and that growth was progressing at a slower rate than last year.
