Barclays results help lift FTSE

British Sky Broadcasting suffered the winner’s curse on Monday as brokers questioned whether it was overpaying for live football.

BSkyB last week won five of the six English Premier League broadcasting rights packages at a total cost of £541m a season, up 24 per cent from its current deal.
