Brown drops reform of legal chief’s role

Gordon Brown has abandoned plans to reform the role of the attorney-general, after senior law officers fought a year-long battle to axe the proposal from the new constitutional reform bill.

Mr Brown is determined to press ahead with the bill – due to be presented on Monday – and decided that the battle in Whitehall over the role of the attorney had dragged on long enough.
