BG Group will reveal a recommended cash takeover offer worth about A$5.5bn ($3.4bn) for Queensland Gas Company, a deal that would give the British oil and gas group a leading role in the development of Australia’s coal-bed methane gas reserves.

The deal follows BG’s failure to win Origin Energy, a larger Australian group also with extensive coal bed methane assets, earlier this year with a A$13.8bn offer.
