Overview: Inflation contrasts move sterling

Contrasting news on inflation in the UK and US triggered sharp moves in financial markets on Tuesday, spurring sterling to finally breach the $2 mark against the US currency.

A jump in headline UK consumer inflation to an annual rate of 3.1 per cent in March sharply increased market expectations for more interest rate rises from the Bank of England.
