Ecuador calls on Opec to protect future demand

Ecuador, Opec’s newest member, has warned that the impact of record oil prices means the oil cartel risks jeopardising future demand.

Galo Chiriboga, Ecuador’s oil minister, said over the next five to 10 years the main challenge the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries faced was to “preserve a price equilibrium that keeps crude oil positioned favourably against other alternative energy sources”.
