Schroder has 'no chance' in general election

Since Sunday night the telephone in Manfred Güllner's loft-like office has hardly stopped ringing.

Each time he picks the receiver up the same questions spew out: What will be the outcome of Germany's general election? Why did Gerhard Schröder, the German chancellor, call for the poll a year ahead of time if, as opinion polls indicate, he is bound to lose?
