Human Rights Watch said yesterday that it was concerned for the safety of an Egyptian man who was allegedly raped in police custody and who was sentenced earlier this week to three months in prison.
The apparent torture of Emad al-Kebir, a driver, has shocked Egyptians and sparked a vigorous debate about police abuse in the country. Human rights groups allege that torture has become endemic in Egypt and that it is practised with impunity.
