Musharraf pledges free election

Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan’s president, promised on Monday that his country’s forthcoming parliamentary elections, delayed by a month after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the opposition leader, would be free and transparent.

At the start of an eight-day swing through Europe, Mr Musharraf also told European Union leaders that Pakistan would not waver in its efforts to root out “terrorism and extremism” in its region.
