China drops 'green' GDP index plan

Beijing has scrapped plans for a "green measure" of gross domestic product as it battles to put into effect a vital plank of its economic programme that aims to restrain growth to protect the environment.

A National Bureau of Statistics official said a planned "green" measure of national economic output that took into account the effect on the environment had been dropped because of problems over its calculation.
