Job losses hit 3.5m as downturn gathers pace

US job losses over the past 12 months rose to a record high of 3.5m according to official statistics, as employers in the world's largest economy cut another 500,000 posts in January.

Half of the losses occurred in the past three months as economic slowdown gathered pace, according to Bureau of Labor statistics. More jobs were lost in January than in any other month since 1974.
