Balloon bursts on festive parties in tough times

The Grinch is stalking the corridors of Wall Street, the City of London and global corporate headquarters.

Christmas parties, a source of lavish self-congratulatory spending in recent years, are on the chopping block. Many companies, particularly in financial services, are cutting them out entirely, and others are scaling back, substituting wine for champagne, ruling out oyster bars and shrinking the guest lists.
