Darling warns on bank recapitalisations

Alistair Darling on Tuesday delivered a clear warning to shareholders of Britain’s banks that they should not expect favourable treatment if they asked for government funding or attempted to change the terms of their existing bail-out.

In a written statement to Parliament, the chancellor warned that banks had ”no automatic right” to government funding, and said the terms of any new recapitalisation would be based on market valuations of both ordinary and preference shares.
