Labour plays down expected poll setback

Labour sought to minimise the political impact of expected heavy losses in May's local elections, as Tony Blair and Gordon Brown yesterday launched the party's campaign for the English polls.

The prime minister insisted Labour could avoid an electoral bloodbath, provided voters did not punish the government over issues such as Iraq. "If people took a step back and looked at the record, particularly on things like anti-social behaviour, we'll be fine," he said.
