Malay Islamic party elects top reformers

Political reformers yesterday were elected to key posts in the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) - an indication that the Muslim-majority south-east Asian nation was turning its back on fundamentalist clerics who previously controlled the opposition party.

The party election could pave the way for an alliance between the PAS and Anwar Ibrahim, the charismatic former deputy prime minister.
