Cost-cutters move into mainstream

No sooner had the champagne corks popped to welcome in the new year, some of Britain’s leading consumer businesses – from retailer Asda to pub chain JD Wetherspoon – announced that they were marking the beginning of 2009 with more price cuts.

It has become a familiar story. After a torrid year in developed economies around the world, consumers are being far more considered about how they spend their cash.
