For now, the mythical “Google Phone” is set to remain just that – a myth. But as the internet search company on Monday set out a key piece of its mobile strategy, it threw down a challenge to the mobile industry that could eventually turn out to be more far-reaching than any one new mobile device.
Central to Monday’s news is Android – a package of open Linux-based software designed to make it cheaper and easier to build the next generation of smartphones and mobile phone services. The software, developed by Google, is being promoted by a new 34-strong group of mobile and technology companies and known as the Open Handset Alliance.
