Overview: Bear Stearns rumour adds to woes

Rumours of liquidity problems at Bear Stearns, which the bank denied, sent credit spreads sharply wider on Monday and prompted a sell-off in US and European financial stocks.

Adding to the nervous mood were continued worries about the outlook for the US economy following last Friday’s dire non-farm payrolls data, although those worries failed to stop the oil price closing at a fresh record high.
