John Lewis inspires retailers as FTSE has flat day

A jump in sales at department store John Lewis raised hopes that this Christmas might not be quite the cold turkey the under-pressure high street retailers had feared.

With the sector bracing itself for what some worry could be among the worst festive seasons in years, unexpected news from the unquoted partnership of a 5.8 per cent rise in sales last week helped retail stocks gain across the board on Monday.
