Brown allies defiant after Clarke attack

Gordon Brown’s allies on Thursday claimed the prime minister had emerged unscathed and even strengthened after a ferocious assault on his leadership by Charles Clarke, former home secretary, failed to ignite a wider rebellion.

Mr Clarke said Mr Brown had “months” to show he was up the job or that he should “stand down with honour”. If not, Mr Clarke called on the cabinet to oust the prime minister.
