Top officials on Iraq's constitutional committee said yesterday they were confident of agreeing a draft constitution and seeing it through parliament by August 15, despite deep ethnic divisions and the threat of Sunni members withdrawing.
The committee's chairman, Shia cleric Humam Hamoudi, said a "tentative draft" would be ready by the first week of August, leaving at least a week for adding or deleting articles based on discussions in the National Assembly.
