Brown promises stability in a turbulent world

Gordon Brown won some political breathing space on Tuesday with an impassioned speech to the Labour conference, in effect telling his critics to keep faith with him during the financial crisis.

Mr Brown confounded his reputation as a pedestrian public speaker in a speech laden with personal anecdotes, an admission of mistakes and a double-edged warning to those after his job.
