Hope for ‘shallow’ downturn fades

The speed with which Britain’s economic outlook has darkened has taken even seasoned observers by surprise, including the CBI, whose members are the backbone of the nation’s economy.

Having announced in September that a “short, shallow” recession was likely for the second half of 2008, the employers’ group has now seen necessary to bring forward its 2009 outlook to predict the deepest recession since 1991.
