The political fortunes of Tzipi Livni, the leader of Israel’s governing Kadima party, brightened on Monday after a batch of opinion polls suggested she would win next year’s general election by a slim margin.
Ms Livni on Sunday formally called off her attempt to become prime minister without going to the polls, after it became clear that the current coalition government was unwilling to support her bid for power. She will now continue to serve as foreign minister under Ehud Olmert, who has promised to step down as prime minister to fight corruption allegations.
