Romano Prodi, Italy’s prime minister whose fragile centre-left coalition has been seriously weakened by defections, faces a fight for his political survival in parliament on Wednesday in the first of two votes of confidence.

Shifting loyalties are a constant in Italian politics and aides were frantically counting heads on Tuesday. Mr Prodi is generally expected to secure approval when the lower house votes on Wednesday afternoon, but the Senate battle on Thursday will be much closer.
