Gold rises as base metals retreat

Gold battled to regain the $900-an-ounce level on Thursday while base metals staged a retreat amid demand concerns after the International Monetary Fund downgraded its forecasts for global growth.

Bullion came under pressure early in Thursday’s session, sinking to a low of $870.10 a troy ounce, as the dollar strengthened after the US Federal Reserve signalled it was prepared to buy long-term government debt if it would improve credit market conditions.
