Few signs of relief for falling pound

Sterling’s dismal start to the year continued on Thursday as fears mounted that it was set to continue sliding in 2008.

The pound hit a record low against the euro and it also hit its worst level in more than four years on a trade-weighted basis after a report showed the turmoil in the credit markets was spilling over into the economy.
