UN food programme claims it cannot afford to feed the hungry

The United Nations body fighting famine has warned that rising prices for food mean that, on its budget, it can no longer afford to feed the 90m people it has helped for each of the past five years.

The World Food Programme said its purchasing costs had risen "almost 50 per cent in the last five years".
