Recriminations fly as Bush ponders U-turn

President George W. Bush faced one of the most excruciating choices of his presidency on Friday, as the US car industry teetered on the verge of bankruptcy.

The decision before him: whether to perform a spectacular U-turn and further alienate his own Republican party or to risk finishing his time in office with the biggest industrial collapse in US history, with hundreds of thousands if not millions of jobs at stake.
